Your Tanzanian adventure begins upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your Safari Under the Sky driver-guide will provide a warm welcome. You will then embark on the approximately one-hour transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to receive a brief tour overview either today or tomorrow morning. The remainder of the day is entirely at your leisure to relax, recover from your journey, and soak in the first impressions of Tanzania. You can enjoy the hotel’s amenities and rest, preparing for the wildlife encounters that commence tomorrow.
After breakfast, you depart for Tarangire National Park, renowned for its impressive concentrations of wildlife, especially its large herds of elephants. The iconic landscape is dotted with ancient, towering baobab trees. With a packed lunch, you will spend the full day on game drives. The Tarangire River acts as a vital lifeline, attracting elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and numerous antelope species, along with predators like lions and leopards. You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site and continue exploring the diverse ecosystems before driving to your unique tented lodge for the evening.
Today offers a deep cultural immersion away from the parks. After breakfast, you will travel to the lively village of Mto wa Mbu, a remarkable melting pot of different Tanzanian tribes. A guided walking tour will take you through vibrant banana and rice plantations, where you can interact with local farmers and learn about their daily lives. The experience includes a delicious lunch of authentic Tanzanian dishes. In the late afternoon, you will drive to the scenic highlands of Karatu and check into your lodge, ending the day surrounded by peaceful garden sounds.
After breakfast, you begin your scenic drive towards the legendary Serengeti National Park. The route takes you through the verdant highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, offering chances to spot wildlife along the way. Upon entering the Serengeti, you’ll be greeted by the iconic endless plains. You will arrive at your authentic bush camp in time for lunch and some relaxation. In the afternoon, you’ll head out for your first Serengeti game drive, exploring this world-famous ecosystem and searching for wildlife as the sun begins to set.
After breakfast, you depart the central Serengeti and drive to the Ndutu Plains, located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This region is the stage for the calving season, where thousands of wildebeest and zebra gather. You will explore the area around Lake Ndutu, an alkaline lake that attracts a wide variety of wildlife seeking water and relief from the heat, especially from December to April. Your game drive will focus on finding the migratory herds and the predators that follow them, before checking into your specialized camp in the Ndutu region.
This full day is dedicated entirely to the Ndutu region and the calving season phenomenon. After an early breakfast, you will set out to spend the entire day on game drives across the short-grass plains. Your guide will track the massive herds, where you may witness newborn calves taking their first steps—an abundant food source that attracts lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. You will enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush, immersed in this remarkable natural event, and continue your exploration throughout the afternoon, observing the dynamic interactions of predator and prey.
You’ll have an early start for the drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Descending 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking experience. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a natural amphitheater hosting an astonishing concentration of animals, including the rare black rhino, and boasts Africa’s highest density of predators. You will enjoy a full morning of game driving on the crater floor, followed by a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll ascend the crater walls and drive to your comfortable lodge in the Karatu highlands.
After a leisurely final breakfast, you will begin your journey back to Arusha. This scenic drive is your last opportunity to soak in the Tanzanian landscape. Upon arrival in Arusha, you will stop for lunch at a local restaurant and have some time to relax and reflect on the incredible wildlife spectacles you have witnessed. Afterwards, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward departure flight, marking the end of your immersive 8-day calving season safari.
